Water fluoridation is not harmful

To the Editor:

My name is Bradley Woodham, DMD. I have been a practicing dentist for seven years, with three of that as part of the United States Navy. I have completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency and have been in Cape Coral for four years; practicing on Pine Island for two years.

It has come to my attention that the community of Pine Island has received a grant to institute a water fluoridation system, but there has been some hesitancy by some of the residents. I am not a big supporter of the medication trend that is our current health care system. However, there are some simple supplementations that can be utilized that have a large positive impact. Water fluoridation is one of these.

The benefits of this program are best when targeted to assist with strong childhood development. As the diets of our children continue to be guided by fast and convenient foods, having a passive support system to aid in proper tooth development is key. No studies that I am aware of have shown any negative effects with long-term ingestion of low levels of fluoride. These same levels are naturally occurring in some areas of the state. This is how the benefits were discovered to begin with.

These types of decision that affect the population as a whole should be based on sound science and research. Anything that is taken in excess is unhealthy. The body thrives when proper levels of all necessary building blocks are present. Water fluoridation is one of the best ways to assure this need is met.
