Lions Club says thanks

To the editor:

The Greater Pine Island Lions Club held its White Cane awareness days two weeks during October. We want to thank those who generously donated to our project of providing eye exams and glasses for elderly, children and those who cannot afford them. We collected more than $1,100, which will allow us to provide 11 individuals with eye exams and glasses.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Lions had a booth at the Kiwanis Fall Festival at the Catholic Church. This was our first year to participate and we had a great time. The children “Spun our Wheel” and won prizes or candy. It was a new game and well received by children and adults.

Thanks to Publix Supermarket at Burnt Store and Pine Island Road for donating coloring books and crayons; Lee Co. Trauma Center for its donation of 100 flashing red hearts to be worn by children on their clothing when riding bikes or walking at night; Winn Dixie for gift certificate we used at the store to buy bubbles; individual donations of 70 small toy cars; 30 bouncy balls; wands; necklaces; yo-yos; hair clasps; colored Bandaids; play dough; bracelets and other items too numerous to mention. The Lions Club also purchased items to fill the void. A special thanks to Paul Alexander for making and donating the Wheel for the Lions in time for this event.

Sunday we participated in The Community Church’s Trunk or Treat. This is our third year at this one and again we give gifts. We hadn’t planned for two events but thanks to everyone who donated, we had enough and have a few things left for next year. Thanks also for the families who came out and enjoyed both of these events.
