Salute America’s workers

1 min read

To the editor:

My husband was a union worker in Chicago. He is now retired and we’re grateful that the SSA check and union pension check arrive every month.

Since we’ve retired to Florida, we are constantly amazed that people viscerally hate unions in this area. People write in to the newspaper very often berating unions.

The majority of “snowbirds” or people retiring in Florida can afford to live here because they have pensions from their union work. People here in Florida have jobs because they are employed where these retirees spend money for example

Construction/contractors, retail stores, restaurants, hotels, doctors offices, hospitals, car dealers and repair shops. gas stations and these union retirees pay Florida taxes.

Without these union retirees patronizing these businesses, many people would not have work and, therefore, wouldn’t earn a paycheck. it is quite hypocritical that employed people hate unions – unions are a big reason why they have a job to go to. With all respect, I salute all workers and wish them continued security in their future
