On June 20, we witnessed a small grey cat getting hit by a truck near Island Avenue in Matlacha. The driver did not stop, so we took the cat to Lee County Domestic Animal Services, where the compassionate staff determined that it had a broken back. “Smokey” was euthanized to prevent further suffering. I am sharing the following helpful information from their website:
Lee County Domestic Animal Services – Phone 533-7389 or email spay@leegov.com for an appointment. Free spay/neuter for pets of owners on public assistance who own cats, pit bulls and pit bull mixes. Owners must pay for the cost of the county license ($8). They also provide free sterilization for feral outdoor cats through a Trap-Neuter-Return program.
Other Lee COunty low-cost veterinary services: Appointments are necessary. Call in advance for available service and fees.
