Time for catastrophic loss insurance
To the editor:
The tragic loss of life and property due to tornadoes across our country begs for a long term solution. Our Florida lawmakers continue to pander to insurance companies. Meanwhile, Florida homeowners are paying 30-70 percent increases this year for windstorm and property coverage.
There should be a federal insurance program covering catastrophic losses available to all homeowners across the country. The federal government has done a great job of establishing and overseeing our flood insurance program. Are any of our lawmakers working on a similar program for catastrophic losses?
Florida homeowners and our friends across the country need a catastrophic insurance plan modeled on the flood insurance plan and administered by the federal government.
Our lawmakers should be held accountable for their lack of effort to make this happen. Perhaps the insurance lobby has been too influential. Please call, write, e-mail anyone you can to get this ball rolling.
We all deserve nothing less than a national catastrophic insurance plan.
