It is an honor to be color blind

To the editor:

On May 15, 2011 Defense Secretary Robert Gates said this about President Barack Obama on CBS 60 Minutes. “I worked for a lot of these guys. And this is one of the most courageous calls – decisions — that I think I’ve ever seen a president make,”

About one week earlier in Volume 34 Number 34 of the Pine Island Eagle, it should be noted this writer used “leadership and courage” to describe President Obama’s actions to get Osama Bin Laden. For my candid observation, I received several “Blocked” number phone calls using an ugly racial epithet. Allow me to address this.

My Mom and Dad BOTH served in the US Navy during WW II. My Dad stayed in the Navy but my Mum went to work for the Department of the Navy as a civilian. They hired “Big Nellie” to take care of me and my sister. “Big Nellie” was African-American. To this day, I love her as much as my own mother. For those who called my home and made racial slurs over the telephone, allow me to again quote Defense Secretary Gates. “To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, and be nothing.”

Big Nellie once told me her savior, Jesus Christ, was color blind. I said, “can’t he get help with that” or so goes the legend. It is an honor to be color blind.
