We are having fun with words

2 min read

To the editor:

I’m pleased to be a member of the Pine Island Writers (PIW), an island organization that promotes the art of writing. Founded by a small, dedicated group 12 years ago, they meet regularly to encourage, inspire and critique each other’s work. That tradition continues today. Our motto is “we have fun with words, seriously.”

Each winter, we hold seminars on topics such as self-publishing, fundamentals of writing and host authors who share their techniques with us, be it humor, fiction or crime and suspense. Our Feb. 19, seminar featured Lisa Black, crime and mystery author who works as a CSI for the Cape Coral police.

We are a non-profit organization and are members of the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce. We support “Creative Coast” endeavors, as well as contribute to Pine Island charities through our publications. Our fifth book, newly released, is “The Spirit of Pine Island.” It is filled with poetry and prose that captures the essence of the island we live on and most importantly was created by members of PIW. We will be at Earth and Spirit on Saturday, March 12, supporting one of our members, Barbara Darling, who is showcasing her Pottery and Poetry. Members will be reading from Spirit of Pine Island. Books will be available. In addition, PIW will have a table at the Lee County Reading Festival on Saturday, March 19. Our own published authors, James L. Voris will have his two books, “The First Time I met God” and “Trash Man” for sale as well as Laurie Ruhl who wrote, “One Shining Starfish.” In addition, Denege Patterson, author of “Edisonia Native Girl, Life Story of Florence Keen Sanasom” will have her books for sale on April 2 and 18. Denege Patterson will be hosting book discussions of Edisonia Native Girl at the Randell Research Center. Clearly, PIW is supportive of its members and proud of their achievements.

We meet on Monday nights at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Stringfellow Road. Visit our website at pineisandwriters.org or better yet, come join us. Beginners welcome. Everyone has a story to write.
