Taxpayers can’t afford overpaying for property

2 min read

To the editor:

I have a question for Lee County’s commissioners: How does over paying for a piece of distressed property that was in foreclosure until you showed interest in it benefit the citizens of Lee County right now?

You were the only cash buyer, and the property was too expensive at $335K per acre to purchase for additional parking or another baseball field at the Lee County Sports complex.

Yes, this money came from tourist development money and not ad valorem tax dollars, but that shouldn’t matter. It is and was bad business to over pay in this economy for property, and I think all of you know it deep down inside.

As a concerned taxpayer I ask that you tighten your collective belts a little, and stop this unbridled spending that we just cannot afford.

Lee County is at 12.5 percent-plus unemployment in case you hadn’t noticed and your efforts should be focused on saving money, not spending it like the citizens are doing each day just to survive this troubled economy.

Hoping that you wake up and smell the coffee or TEA one of these days, until then I will be waiting for the bump in millage rate. I know it’s coming and so do you.
