Leoma will be greatly missed

To the editor:

Leoma Lovegrove opened her art gallery almost 13 years ago in Matlacha. Later came the WildChild Gallery, which features the works of local artists and is run by Peggy MacTeague. Now we have more wonderful shops such as Elena’s, with original silver jewelry and art items, and Matlacha Menangerie, which offers a delightful selection of eclectic island inspired items.

But Leoma’s gallery stands out for its uniqueness. It should be noted that Leoma Lovegrove was THE ONE to got art in Matlacha off to a great start and has been successful enough that she has recently donated $10,000 to the Berne Davis Art Center to further the arts in Lee County.

The Dirty Laundry hung by one island artist is beneath contempt as she is targeting someone who has been a generous and supportive member of our community, and many endeavors in our county. When the oil spill happened in April, Leoma offered to donate $15,000 worth of art to be sold to benefit CROW, the bird rescue association on Sanibel. She has donated her Painting Out Loud events to churches, where she has painted images of Jesus, and other groups to raise funds for worthy causes such as support of 9/11 victims.

Leoma Lovegrove will be sorely missed here on Pine Island, as she is moving her international headquarters to Sanibel. And she should not be denigrated for tearing down a fence that had rotted due to mulch being piled upon it. Or for objecting to underwear being hung in its place.

I, for one, will miss this exceptional woman who has done so much for Matlacha. Shine on, Leoma!
