Be kind to your servers
To the editor:
The holiday season is one of giving and kindness. Or at least that’s the idea that most folks have in their head, but I’m terribly disappointed by the treatment some of the servers at our local eateries are getting at the hands of impatient patrons. The snowbirds are back. So yes, we now have the pleasure of driving 40 down Stringfellow, but along with that, our island economy is getting a much needed boost. Restaurants are busy. This includes everybody from the kitchen to the servers to the bussers. Be aware: this is not a bad thing. It’s not difficult to realize the cause and effect that that plays out in a busy restaurant atmosphere. There are many people to attend to and cook for (cause) and it’s entirely possible that you may not get lavished with all the attention that you normally would during our slow summer months (effect). This certainly does not mean that the staff are not doing their best to serve the patrons. In fact, the happier the diners are the happier the staff are, naturally. Not only because it’s the season for it, but especially because I know our dear island is populated by decent and caring folks: I implore you to have a look around the next time your pitcher of beer or plate of chow doesn’t arrive in August-timeframe fashion. There might be a lot more going on than is initially apparent to the average diner.
