Contact FISH or VFW before purchasing medical equipment
To the editor:
I congratulate the VFW for finding a good use for used medical equipment (The Eagle, 22 Sept, 2010). That is a nice service for the community. However I would remind residents that P. I. FISH has operated a Medical Equipment Lending Closet for over 20 years. In an average 12-month period we loan, at no cost, over 200 pieces of medical mobility equipment to residents of Greater Pine Island. The equipment consists of wheelchairs; transport chairs; walkers including regular as well as 2, 3, and 4 wheel models; canes; crutches; bedside commodes; and shower chairs/stools. If anyone has a temporary need for such equipment they should call FISH at 283-4442 or also contact the VFW before they let their Doctor or therapist give (that means sell) them equipment. If FISH or the VFW have the equipment available for loan, you will save yourself a lot of money.
If you have used equipment of these types that is in good condition, but you no longer need it, I would encourage you to contact either FISH or the VFW to see if a need exists on the Island. If so, you can donate the equipment and help your fellow Islanders. While I cannot speak for the VFW, I can speak for FISH in saying that we would also appreciate any monetary donations you would like to make in support of this Lending Closet effort — simply make out a check to P. I. FISH and mail it to P. I. FISH, PO Box 357, Matlacha, 33993.
Again, thanks to the VFW for joining in this effort to help Island residents.
