World War II vet down on his luck

To the editor:

All the great things in life are simple and can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty and hope.

I am now in need of some help for the first time in my life. My daughter has taken me to the veterans office off of Metro to seek assistance for my lack of air-conditioning, my bathroom needs to be renovated to fit my walker and wheelchair and finally, my 8X10 sunshine room needs to be insulated to cut down on my $300 per month electric bill. The veterans people informed me I need to fill out a stockpile of informational forms just to be considered. They have no idea when or if I will receive any of these requested services.

Lastly, I have been waiting 65 years to receive nine medals awarded to me which include a Medal of Honor and Bronze just to name a few. The Veterans Association keeps telling me they are in the mail.

I have lived on Pine Island for many years on Genesee Parkway. I will be turning 94 come Nov. 8. I still and always will be a soldier to make sure our country is safe and secure.

If anyone can help me out with a donation or with any of my issues please contact my daughter, Vickie Allender, at 443-8075.
