Cape Coral or Matlacha?

2 min read

To the Editor:

I have lived on Pine Island for 35 years and never thought I would get lost in Matlacha or Cape Coral. Right now, I am confused as to where Cape Coral ends and Matlacha begins or where Cape Coral begins and Matlacha ends. Can someone help me find my way? Here is how it all began. I was on my way home to Bokeelia from Cape Coral when I called information (411) to get Le’s Oriental Cuisine’s phone number to order take out for dinner. When asked, “What city and state?” I said, “Matlacha, Florida.” Then I was asked, “What listing?” I said, “Le’s Oriental Cuisine.” I was told there was no listing for Le’s in Matlacha. I then said, “Le’s on Pine Island Road in Matlacha.” I was told again there was no listing for Le’s in Matlacha, but there was one for Le’s in Cape Coral. I asked for the number. I was told “283-5355.” I recognized the number to be Le’s in Matlacha. By this time I was baffled. Am I in Matlacha or in Cape Coral? When I arrived at Le’s I looked at the menu sitting at the take-out window and read 4205 Pine Island Road, Matlacha, Fla. Please call ahead and save time. I told the waitress behind the counter that (411) information was telling people they were located in Cape Coral. She then said, “No wonder we get orders from Cape Coral, but they never pick them up.” Hmmm … can they be lost, too? I then told Le and she said she knows and she has tried several times to tell them her business is not in Cape Coral, but in Matlacha and they would not change it. So, as I drove through Matlacha-Cape Coral, I wondered how much business that has cost her and are other businesses in Matlacha affected as well? So, I looked up businesses in the Embarq telephone book on the east side of the Matlacha bridge (or is it the Cape Coral Bridge? I don’t know anymore) and low and behold they are listed with Cape Coral addresses and ZIPs. Is the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce in Cape Coral? Is Matlacha Isles in Cape Coral? Do they get their mail delivered with Cape Coral addresses and ZIPs? Can someone please tell me what is going on?
