More on the Tennis Group Hall of Fame

2 min read

To the Editor:

We see according to the April 8 Eagle that certain people were inducted into the Tennis Group Hall of Fame. Joanne Johnson and I wish to correct and add to the information given.

Jo Johnson, Alice Wilson, Mary Roughton and I were the first on that tennis court, when there was only one court. After a year or so, Ginny and Bud Olding joined us, and then a few more. It soon became too crowded and I contacted Jim Lavender of the county Parks and Recreation, and negotiated for more tennis courts. I pushed for four courts, but that would have meant crossing the road, and that parcel was already designated for sewage. We, of course, ended up with three courts and from there our fame grew.

We got more and more morning people – myself and Ruth played all summer long when others left or gave up.

Does anybody remember our birthday party for Ed Riley’s 80th birthday. Ed was there every morning and would sweep up if needed with his own big broom.

And lastly, Jo Johnson wants to remind everybody that she was the first one to break her arm on the court.

Sic transit gloria
