Thanks for a great day

To the Editor:

Discovered again! The backyard golf course behind Post 136 was cause once more to appreciate one of Pine Island’s overlooked treasures. And it is because of all those other Pine Island treasures that sponsored “The One Hole Over the Pond Golf Outing” that such a great day was enjoyed. Not to mention the over $2,500 raised for veterans!

One of those treasures, Winn-Dixie got the day started with a continental breakfast. With a round of golf for two and cart at Alden Pines as a first prize, Joe Polis put that meal to work and sent a sweet shot 18 inches from the pin! There were many almost as close, our Head Pro Tom Ruscik tells us, and talk of keeping the course available for casual matches is being heard. Drop by the post or see Tom and volunteer to caddy. That was Jim Love’s golf cart providing transportation and entertainment. It’s for sale and we hope whoever buys that classy rig keeps it in good shape and brings it back next year.

All day duffers swung for veterand and a shot at a meal in one of our great island eateries. Woody’s, Little Lilly’s, Cap’n Con’s, and Dairy Queen are all great places to bring a veteran. Stop by and tell ’em thanks for us.

St. James Auto helped things run smooth by donating a free oil change. Remember to change yours! Doc Watson’s sent us the most sought after prizes. See if the doctor has any more.

Budweiser, Miller Lite and The Beacon of Hope were all a big help. You can help them. Recycle!

With all the action outside it was surprising to see the dancing inside! “Skunk Monkey” and “The Last Resort” made the place jump! We hope to see more of them.

Bringing all this to the attention of the public would not have been possible without the Eagle. Thanks Marianne. And, of course, Studley’s signs and art work and Linda Mitchel’s tickets.

Along with donations from the S.A.L., the post, the auxiliary, Matlacha Cottages, The Paisley Parrot and Richard Issacson, we must thank the real jewels in this treasure chest we call Pine Island, the volunteers! What can you say to thank the most important asset of them all? The volunteers!

Thanks to Ron, Pete, Diane, Larry, Dottie, Patti Paul and all the other great volunteers. It could not be done without you.
