My thoughts about development on Pine Island

2 min read

To the editor:

Over the years, I have read in The Eagle and listened to many points of views about development on Pine Island. Lately, I hear bits and pieces about Publix coming to Pine Island at the center. There seems to be projects ranging from drug stores to bridges continually circulating on an island which in my humble opinion may have enough banks, stores, churches, fire houses, etc. to meet the current needs of its people.

Thankfully, we do have folks with vision who are engaged in land preservation and others who serve as watch dogs to prevent over-development. But, we do have an aging population and we need to address this. We do not have any type of housing such as an assisted living/nursing facility for folks who want to remain on this lovely island when they can no longer live independently. How often do we see the elderly move into a city because housing is lacking?

It is my hope that a developer will plan such a place for the older people. In fact, even a picturesque lake could be constructed where our wildlife could be enjoyed. Pine Island has so much to offer!

The goals for the development of Pine Island must be reflective of its people and harmonious with its surroundings. We need to remember that it is our privilege to be able to enjoy the beauty of Pine Island as well as our responsibility for its welfare.

So, whenever new discussions about development projects arise, let’s think creatively and avoid those that are imposed on us but rather continue to preserve Pine Island’s way of life and insure its future.
