More on four-way stop procedures
To the Editor:
The recent letter on use of four-way stops was correct as far as it went, but didn’t address the situation where there are cars from all four directions, and every one has a car on their right and their left. Some advocate a single car at a time, from each of the four points of the compass, which has two problems. First, it slows traffic because only one car moves at a time and, second, there is no agreement as to the sequence, clockwise or counter-clockwise.
The procedure recommended by the National Safety Council is far better. The four-way stop sign should be treated like a traffic signal which changes every time a pair of cars go through. An East/West pair, a North/South pair, and so on. Cars going straight have the right of way over cars making a left turn.
It’s foolproof.
At the risk of diluting the message, I can’t resist commenting on the swearing in ceremony of Hillary Clinton. Slick Willy turned what should have been a solemn occasion into a side show by trying to put his hand on the Bible. Then Joe Biden, who was rebuked by President Obama for his sophomoric comments on Chief Justice Robert’s memory slip during Obama’s swearing in, proceeded to mess it up even worse. Hillary, who is not my favorite, looked Biden in the eye and repeated the oath correctly, amid laughter from the audience.
