Community Church is a real church
To the Editor:
Recently I heard a rumor that the Pine Island Community Church was not a “real” church. It was upsetting for me to hear that. I wondered why someone would think or even say that? Is this church not “real” because we meet for worship in the cafeteria of an elementary school, that we sit on metal chairs versus cushioned pews, that we have a time for coffee and conversation among old friends as well as new ones, that our pastor would dress in camouflage to deliver a sermon, that a 95-year-old gentleman starts each service playing harmonica, that we don’t have a choir but a dedicated group of individuals who lead us in both traditional hymns and contemporary praise songs?
Perhaps we are not “real” because we come as we are, individuals from all walks of life. Some will be dressed in their Sunday best while others choose the attire of the island (shorts and sandals).
Pine Island Community Church may not have the normal surroundings of most churches, but the spirit of Christ is present each Sunday morning as well gather to worship. Not only is Pine Island Community Church “real,” it is alive and active. This church may not be for everyone, but anyone is invited.
My family and I are excited to be part of a congregation that supports each other during sad times as well as joyous ones. A congregation that lends a helping hand to those in need. Pine Island Community Church is a place to be among friends, to grow, to learn and to discover more about the birth of Jesus Christ our Lord.
As we approach the Christmas season, not only will I be celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, but also the birth of Pine Island Community Church.
