Gene A Smith age 87 of Decatur, MI and formerly of Davenport, IA passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016 in Bronson Methodist Hospital Kalamazoo, MI.
Gene was born December 3, 1928 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Ward R and Bernice (Reams) Smith.
He was owner/operator of Mr Home Grown in the Quad Cities, IA. Gene enjoyed an active life, especially his time at the cottage on Christie Lake, where he and his friends and family have made cherished memories for over 50 years. He loved to design and continued to improve his patented invention until the end of his journey. He spent winters on Pine Island in Florida and delivered Palm trees for Palmco on the island and was a member of the Moose and Elks Lodges in Florida. He married Shirley Tweedy December 18, 1948 and she preceded him in death October 2005. Survivors include 2 daughters Vicki Coppinger and Debra VanHoosier of Davenport, IA, a son Scott (Sandy) Smith of Geneseo, IL, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 sisters Karen Smith of Reston, Virginia, Susan (Mike) Stolmeier of Orcas Island, WA and friend and companion Eileen Thomas of Decatur.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Newell Funeral Home, Decatur, MI.
