Dr. Johnny Wilson Turner
Dr. Johnny Wilson Turner, 88, of Bokeelia, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, in Cape Coral. He was born May 1, 1924, in Amarillo, Texas, to James Aubrey Turner and Emma Agnes (Wilson) Turner.
He graduated from Lefors High School in Texas, worked his way through college and completed his pre-med at the University of Texas. While there boxing as a heavyweight, he won the school championship.
He graduated in 1950 with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
He served his country during the Korean War with the United States Army as port surgeon in Whittier, Alaska. While at Whittier, he coached boxing to the troops, never losing a fight.
He began his residency in family practice at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound in Seattle, where he learned medicine, surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics. After his residency, he had a family practice in Ketchikan, Alaska, and Rainier Beach in Seattle, Wash.
He went into emergency medicine at Valley General Hospital in Renton, Wash., where he became chief of emergency medicine and then chief of staff. He established a family practice and urgent care clinic in Covington, Wash., and worked there until his retirement in 1987.
After his retirement, he lived in Kent then Sequim, Wash., moving to Bokeelia in 1999.
He loved gardening – grew the best tomatoes – traveling the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia, and golfing – with a hole in one to his credit. He enjoyed classical music and playing the violin.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman who had a world of experiences and always a story to tell. He could be opinionated, but one always knew where he was coming from. He was a kind, loving person.
He especially loved Carol Ann, whom he referred to as a breath of spring, the love of his life. She shared his love of fishing, hunting and gardening. He looked forward to his sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren’s visits; they loved boating, fishing and shelling with dad and granddad.
He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 26 years, Carol Ann (Geiger) Turner; sons, Dr. Stewart (JoAnn) Turner of Cape Neddick, Maine, Roger (Linda) Turner of Seattle, Wash., and Michael (Lisa) Turner of Spring, Texas; grandchildren, Elizabeth Turner, Sarah Turner, Marie Turner, Benjamin Turner, John Robert Turner and Rachael Turner; sisters-in-law, Anne Turner, Joanna Turner and Rosemary Geiger VonBank; brothers-in-law, Donald (Dorothy) Geiger, LeRoy (Jeanne) Geiger, James (Sharon) Geiger; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, James Aubrey Turner and Bobby Gibson Turner.
A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in New Prague, Minn.
