Fred “Freddie” Eugene Russell

Fred “Freddie” Eugene Russell, 86, passed away peacefully Nov. 11, 2012. Born and raised in California, he served in World War II as a Merchant Marine. Following his wartime service, he owned and operated The Castle restaurant in Santa Cruz, Calif., until moving the family via his personal aircraft to Matlacha, Fla., in 1960.

After moving to Matlacha, he along with his wife of 62 years, Mary, owned and operated Russell’s Texaco for 47 years, serving the needs of our fishing industry and retirement community.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; sister, Dorothy Elworthy of Santa Cruz, Calif.; sons, Fred IV, Billy and Bobby; his beloved daughters-in-law, Gayle, Laurie and Kim; grandchildren, Eric, Cynthia, Shelby and Jake.

He was a sage and pillar of our family and community and will be missed by many.

Family and friends are welcome to gather and celebrate Freddie’s life next Sunday, Nov. 25, from 3-5 p.m. at 2637 Clyde St. in Matlacha.
