James Stephen Keating, Jr.

James Stephen Keating, Jr., 83, of Matlacha, FL passed away on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011. He was born on June 15, 1927 in Fort Myers, FL to James and Mae Melton Keating. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Keating was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a B.S and M.A. in Music Education. He started his career as a Band Director in Alabama then moved to Florida and after 30 years, retired as the Professor of Music Education for Polk Community College. Mr. Keating also served as interim music director for various churches throughout Florida. He loved fishing and music, and moved to Matlacha in 1985. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Ft. Myers.

He is survived by his loving family including his wife of 59 years, Helen Moody Keating; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Keating of Arlington, VA; and son, Joseph Michael Keating of Columbus, GA.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service on Thursday, Jan. 6, at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 SW Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral. Burial with military honors will follow at Coral Ridge Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations in his memory be made to Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Parkway, Cape Coral, FL 33909.
