Mary Elizabeth Cowan Walker
Mary Elizabeth Cowan Walker, 92, of North Fort Myers passed away Sept. 16, 2010 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral. She was born May 14, 1918 in Oxon Hill, Maryland, the eldest daughter of the late Elwin and Mamie Shegogue Cowan. She was married for 58 years to the late Walter Watson Walker, Jr. During World War II she worked for the War Department in Washington D.C., MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa and the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. Later she studied art and became an accomplished artist, winning awards and recognition for her work. Her interest expanded to entrepreneurship and she opened “Studio Haven” which specialized in Hummel and Norman Rockwell figurines, plates and other collectibles. During the 1980s she and her husband began spending winters in Southwest Florida and eventually became full-time residents in 1991. Mary was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church in Friendly, MD, and later transferred to North Fort Myers United Methodist Church. She was a lifelong member of the Unity Chapter, No. 112, Order of the Eastern Star, Camp Springs, MD.
She is survived by her loving family including her son, Walter W. Walker, III and his wife, Judy; two sisters, Viola Moore of El Cajon, CA and Ada Cox of Maryland; nephews and nieces from both the Cowan and Walker families. She was predeceased by her husband Walter W. Walker, Jr and her brother, Edward H. Cowan.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 21st at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 SW Pine Island Rd. She will be buried beside her husband at Coral Ridge Cemetery.
