Charles Douglass Miller
Charles (aka Charlie or Chuck) Douglass Miller passed away at the age of 56 of complications from a stroke and cancer on Nov. 19, 2009, in Fort Myers, Fla. He was a well-loved resident of Pine Island for over 30 years, working for Useppa Island Club .
Charlie was known by all as a loyal friend, a man of few words with a never-ending zeal for life. Chuck had an undying passion for fishing, boating, music, gardening and nature; his enthusiasm for these was only surpassed by his devotion to his friends and extensive family.
Charlie faced each day as a new adventure and confronted each challenge, be it hurricanes, bad hips or the string of bad luck which finally sent him sailing off into the sunset, with his signature dry wit, crooked smirk, roll of his nearsighted eyes and a “Let’s do what we need to and have some fun when we are done!” approach.
Chuck was born and raised in California where his love of the water and music were born and nurtured, but in his heart, Pine Island was home and his friends and neighbors and the surrounding community his family.
Chuck will live in the hearts of those whose lives he touched and who were fortunate enough to have known him, including his loving Mother, Zada Miller of Sacramento, Calif.; his brothers, Ryan, Kevin, Cary, Colin, Carl and Ed; his sisters, Colleen and Anne; aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and, of course, his extended family, especially Lee and Luz Chilson who have been dubbed “Charlie’s Angels” for being there every step of the way.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Robert Carl Miller.
Charlie will be remembered in the sunset on the water, the taste of fresh ripe mangos, the feel of a nibble at the end of a fishing line and in every bluegrass tune which dares us to keep still.
