Edith Marckel

Edith Marckel, 89, of Matlacha, died Feb. 7, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. She was born June 9, 1919, in Millersburg, Elkhart County, Ind., to Edward and Ida Musselman. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1938. She went on to be a registered nurse, graduating from Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. After graduation, she worked at the Goshen Hospital.

After moving to Florida, she was supervisor of labor and delivery at North Shore Hospital in Miami. She then worked for F.A. Gunion, MD, Miami Shores for 29 years until her retirement.

She was a member of Moose Lodge Chapter 1843 of Pine Island.

She is survived by her only child, Beverly Buhler (Sherman Gainey) of Cape Coral; her only granddaughter, Bonnie (Jeffery) Fortier; her companion of many years, Theodore A. Koniecki of Matlacha, and his children, Lizabeth Koniecki of Matlacha and Valerie Zebrowski of Bethel, Conn. Also surviving are her nieces, Betty, Mildred, Christina, Karen, Connie, Katie and Evelyn, all of Goshen, Ind.; her brother, William Musselman of Goshen, Ind.; her nephews, the Rev. Kenneth Marckel and Leslie Marckel; and niece, Ramona Gephart from Ohio and Indiana.

Her family wants to thank all of her doctors, nurses and aides. They are most gracious for the Hope Hospice Team 310, all of the medical team at Hope Hospice, especially, Helene, Breanda, Joe and Carl. These special people were caring and compassionate. They were the family angels.
