Arthur R. Hilser
Arthur R. Hilser, known as Art, from Newark, N.J., passed away suddenly Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008. Many knew Art in different ways when he came to Pine Island five years ago to life with his “daughter” in St. James City. He was a true patriot who stood up for what he believed in, and would find ways to get things fixed in the local communities. At his home in Cape Coral, his neighbors referred to him as the “mayor…” he made a lot of friends at city hall and code enforcement, making sure his neighborhood was not going to be trashed.
Many got to know Mr. Hilser when he lived in St. James City either at the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Froggy’s, Ragged Ass or at Woody’s. He drove his Harley Road King with so much passion and named her “Rosebud,” after his “Darling” who passed away in 2003. In his earlier years, he belonged to a group of guys who all had 1948 PanHeads — he referred to them as crazy years. He served 6+ years in the Army National Guard and two years in the Army stationed at Fort Hood, where he also met Elvis Presley, whom he always had conversation with, and also pointed out that Elvis had light hair.
He worked for Bilkays Trucking firm in Elizabeth, N.J., for over 23 years and he was very much involved with the Teamsters Union 476, which is now 560.
But most of all — he was a man of love and devotion for his family and for those whom were close to him. He always had a smile and always wanted to know your name. He had a million life stories and opinions and was very well read. He truly loved his country.
As he rides his Harley to the heavens to join his bride, Rosebud, we will all remember him in our own way. I will miss his love for me and celebrating life with him. As one close friend wrote me: “The hummingbirds’ delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and the laughter is life’s sweetest creation; as it passes, embrace all that life has to offer and celebrate the joy of everyday.”
Viewing and funeral will be held at Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home, 275 W. Milton Ave., Rahway, N.J., on Dec. 10 and 11.
