A 16-year-old was sent to the hospital early Sunday morning after being shot in Cape Coral.

At about 2:44 a.m., Cape police responded to a shooting at the RaceTrac, at 314 Del Prado Blvd., N. Officers determined that it occurred in the road in front of the store, resulting in a traffic crash.

Two victims in the shooting were located behind the RaceTrac, according to officials.

They told police that they had left a party after having an argument with a known person. When they entered their vehicle and left, another vehicle followed them from the location. They told police that as they drove in the 300 block of Del Prado Boulevard North, an unknown suspect shot at their vehicle.

Officials reported that one of the occupants in the vehicle was struck.

The driver of the vehicle then collided into a light pole in front of the RaceTrac, according to police. The victims stated that they ran from the scene, fearing that the shooting suspect would return.

Several people were seen fleeing the vehicle, but only two were located by police.

The victim shot in the incident was taken to a local hospital.

“The victim was transported with a non-life threatening injury,” CCPD Lt. Dana Coston said in an email on Tuesday. “I don’t know their current status or whether they are still in the hospital.”

According to records, the 16-year-old victim is male.

Lee County Electric Cooperative responded to the scene to repair the light pole.
