An off-duty Cape Coral police officer was critically injured in an alcohol-related crash early Saturday morning after the vehicle she was driving failed to make a turn and crashed into a home off Nicholas Parkway, police officials said Monday.

Emily Zyvoloski, 33, sustained life-threatening injuries and was trauma-alerted to a local hospital, according to a release issued by the Cape Coral Police Department. The impact into the garage left the home at 422 Nicholas Parkway East with significant structural damage and damaged two vehicles that were parked inside.

The occupants of the home were not injured.

“A criminal investigation regarding this crash is underway, and this traffic crash IS alcohol-related. Charges are pending,” the release states, adding “Zyvoloski will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Officials say the incident happened as the vehicle took a slight right turn at the bend at the 400 block of Nicholas Parkway East around 2 a.m.

“The vehicle failed to take the left turn at the subsequent bend, continuing straight and off the roadway to the right,” the release states. “The vehicle entered onto the property and struck the front corner of the garage.”

Cape Coral Police Patrol units, Forensics, and Major Crash Investigators responded.

Zyvoloski is employed by the Cape Coral Police Department as an officer, but was off-duty and in a private vehicle at the time of the crash.

She has been employed by the Cape Coral Police Department as an officer since 2007.

“We hold ourselves and our officers to the highest standards of conduct, both on and off-duty. This crash is being investigated just like any other would be under similar circumstances. At the conclusion of the criminal investigation, the Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an internal investigation,” said Chief Dave Newlan in the prepared statement.
