A Cape Coral motorcyclist has been released from the hospital following a weekend accident.

As of Thursday, George Whittaker, 25, of the Cape, had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken on Saturday after the Cape Coral Parkway Bridge crash, according to officials.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Whittaker was driving a Yamaha R6 westbound across the bridge in the inside lane. At about 10:36 p.m., he began to approach a Toyota Scion also traveling west over the bridge. Whittaker then attempted to change lanes to the outside lane to overtake the Toyota.

As the motorcycle was changing lanes, the side of it collided into the rear corner of the vehicle. The motorcycle overturned several times and came to a final rest in the outside lane, according to the FHP.

Whittaker sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The driver of the Toyota, Joseph Rasch, 67, of the Cape, was not injured in the accident.

The FHP reported that Whittaker was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Alcohol was not a factor. Whittaker was cited for reckless driving.
