Cape Coral woman injured in crash in Hardee County
A Cape Coral woman was hospitalized over the weekend after a hit-and-run in Hardee County.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Maria Vazquez, 80, was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center on Saturday following the accident at state Route 64 and Lockmiller Road.
Vazquez was a passenger in a Kia Sorrento, being driven by Ilena Colon, 53, of the Cape, that was traveling west on SR 64. According to officials, an unknown truck headed east on SR 64 failed to negotiate a curve in the road at 9:40 p.m. just east of the intersection of Lockmiller Road.
The truck rotated counter-clockwise into the westbound lane, directly into the path of the Kia.
The FHP reported that the front of the Kia collided into the rear of the truck. The Kia came to a final stop on the north shoulder of the roadway. The truck left the scene, traveling west on SR 64.
Vazquez sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital via a helicopter.
She was not listed in the hospital’s patient directory on Tuesday, according to officials.
Colon reportedly did not sustain any injuries in the accident.
The FHP reported that the suspect truck is described as an older model pickup, with a camper shell on the back and a roof rack. The driver was described as a younger white man, with dirty blonde hair.
