‘Largest Human Pink Ribbon’ fundraiser set for Saturday
More than 680 people turned out last year to form the Largest Human Pink Ribbon on the grounds of JetBlue Park in Fort Myers and set a U.S. record in the process.
Partners for Breast Cancer Care, the monetary beneficiary of the event, is hoping to surpass last year’s mark this year with its second fundraising event 9-11 a.m. Saturday. The ribbon will start forming at about 10:15 a.m. and an aerial photo will be taken to document the record attempt for the Guinness Book of World Records in the U.S.
“It’s a fun event that puts Fort Myers on the map,” said PFBCC executive director Janet Darnell. “You don’t have to be athletic to participate. Last year we had people with walkers and wheelchairs.”
The Largest Human Pink Ribbon event is one of two major fundraising endeavors for PFBCC. The event grew from an idea brought forward by board member Gail Marra of Cape Coral.
“We hope it grows every year and becomes our signature October event,” said Darnell. “We are the only non-profit in Lee County that funds free breast screenings, diagnostic testing and treatment for uninsured and low income people in need.”
The human ribbon is formed by patrons who donate $20 to purchase a pink umbrella. Donors are directed to form the ribbon and open their umbrellas. Participants who have pink umbrellas from last year’s event can participate again for a $10 donation.
Rain or shine, vendors will be on the grounds distributing pamphlets and coupons related to cancer causes as well as displays of antique cars, a pink fire truck and vehicles with the Caloosa Jeepers of Southwest Florida. JetBlue Park concession stands will be open selling food and beverages.
Parking at the event is free for all participating. Pets are not allowed to accompany patrons.
Registration can be done online in advance, helping to speed up the registration process on the day of the event. Payments can be made as well for up to four umbrellas at a time.
Umbrellas ordered online can be picked up in advance of the event at Partners for Breast Cancer Care, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers.
