A student who was struck earlier this week by a Cape Coral driver has died at the hospital.

Cameron Michael Mayhew, 16, of Fort Myers, expired from his injuries on Thursday at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken following the accident along Pine Ridge Road, according to officials.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Zachery H. Treinen, 23, was driving a Chrysler vehicle southbound on Pine Ridge, south of Kelly Road, while a Lee County school bus traveled northbound on Pine Ridge. The bus stopped at the entrance to Bombay Lane and extended its stop signal arm.

At the same time, Cameron was standing on the west side of Pine Ridge.

At 5:47 a.m., the teen attempted to cross the southbound lanes of Pine Ridge to get to the school bus, according to the FHP. Treinen failed to stop for the bus and the front of the vehicle hit Cameron.

The teen was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.

The FHP reported on Friday that Cameron was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Treinen was initially cited for failing to stop for a stopped school bus.

“The above charge will be amended from involving serious bodily injury to death, which will carry a mandatory court date,” Lt. Greg Bueno, spokesman for the FHP, reported Friday in a news release.
