A former nurse was sentenced to prison Tuesday in the rape of a patient at Cape Coral Hospital four years ago.

Jeovanni Hildebrand Hechavarria, 37, sentenced to the maximum of 30 years for one count of sexual battery when victim is helpless.

He also was designated a sexual predator for life.

He was found guilty in January following a trial in Lee County.

Hechavarria was a nurse for Lee Memorial Health Systems.

“A female patient at Cape Coral Hospital reported being sexually assaulted by the defendant, her nurse, one night while she was in her hospital bed in 2016,” a release from the State Attorney’s Office states. “The Cape Coral Police Department investigated and recovered the defendant’s DNA on a towel in the patient’s room that he had used following the attack.”

As part of his sentence, Hechavarria also was ordered to stay away from the victim. He must also pay court costs and the cost of prosecution.

Assistant State Attorneys Audra Thomas-Eth, Erin Hughes, and Michael Colombo Jr. prosecuted the case.
