Registration open for Goblin Gallop 5K at Jaycee Park

Runners and walkers have the opportunity to provide a helping hand for their neighbors during the 8th annual LCEC Goblin Gallop 5K, which will benefit the United Way.

The 5K walk/run will step off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Jaycee Park, 4125 SE 20th Place in Cape Coral. There is a one mile Kids Fun Run that will begin immediately after the 5K concludes. Registration and check-in begins at 7 a.m.

The cut off for early bird registration is Oct. 10 to be guaranteed a T-shirt. Registration is $25 for those 18 and older and $20 for ages 13 to 17. It increases to $30 for all ages the day of the race. Registration for the Fun Run is $15 for those 12 years old and younger.

The Oct. 26 event date means there are a lot of people who dress in costume.

“Come out and have fun and get your goblin on,” LCEC spokesperson Karen Ryan said.

She said the 5K came to be because they are always looking for ways to raise funds for United Way because they understand people, especially in a lot of communities LCEC provides service for, fall on hard times.

“We can help people that fall on hard times by helping United Way,” she said. “We have a fishing tournament, golf tournament and years ago decided to have a 5K race. It has become such a nice tradition. We have been holding it for eight years.”

There has been great support from sponsors, as well as from the community.

“It’s a small race, but perfect for us,” Ryan said of the 100 to 150 runners that attend. “This is our first year holding it at Jaycee Park. You are running along the river.”

She said the race is perfect for those who are not routine runners, but want to get out there and get their health fix.

Last year, Ryan said it was the most heartwarming thing, for some of the participants it was their first 5K race and they got first place in their age group.

“We are really excited again to be able to put this on for the eighth year in a row. There are still so many people in our community that are in need,” she said.

Last year the race raised more than $1,000 for United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties.
