Woman dies from injuries suffered in crash
Thursday evening, the Cape Coral Police Department announced that the passenger on a motorcycle involved in a serious crash on Saturday, Aug. 17, in Cape Coral has died as a result of her injuries.
The investigating officer was notified by the Medical Examiner’s Office that Karen Wynn, 52, of Port Charlotte, passed away due to her injuries on Aug. 22. Wynn was a passenger on a motorcycle when it was involved in a crash at the intersection of Mohawk Parkway and Chiquita Boulevard, South.
According to the CCPD accident report, at 2:14 p.m., last Saturday, a 2013 white Toyota Tacoma driven by Henry W. Sigtermans, 83, of Cape Coral, was westbound on Mohawk Parkway in the left turn lane at the stop sign at Chiquita Boulevard. A 2012 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic motorcycle, driven by Douglas A. Wynn, 55, of Port Charlotte, with Karen Wynn as his passenger, was traveling north on Chiquita Boulevard in the left inside lane approaching the Mohawk Parkway intersection.
The CCPD reports that an unidentified vehicle traveling north on Chiquita in the right outside lane was making a right turn onto eastbound Mohawk Parkway causing traffic to slow down in the right lane. The slowing traffic reportedly obstructed Sigtermans’ view of the inside travel lane, and he pulled out onto Chiquita into the path of the Wynns’ motorcycle.
The impact caused the rear of the motorcycle to raise up and the passenger was ejected and launched over the top of the Tacoma.
Douglas Wynn suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and Karen Wynn suffered life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. Neither was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Sigtermans was uninjured.
