Rally for Clean Water fundraiser to benefit Calusa Waterkeeper

3 min read

The Millennial Brewing Company will host the second annual Rally for Clean Water fundraiser Saturday, showcasing the first free public screening of the documentary “Troubled Waters.”

Calusa Waterkeeper Executive Director KC Schulberg said they have been talking about the fundraiser with Millennial Brewing for several months.

“It gives us an opportunity to get these ideas in front of a different crowd. It’s a great opportunity,” he said of the event.

The Rally for Clean Water will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Aug. 17. A portion of the proceeds raised during the fundraiser will support the ongoing work of Calusa Waterkeeper.

“Water quality is not just another issue here in Southwest Florida. It is our lifeblood. We are thrilled to partner with leading clean water advocacy nonprofit Calusa Waterkeeper for the second Rally for Clean Water,” Millennial Brewing co-owner Amber Cebull said in a prepared statement.

The fundraiser, which is family-friendly, will have live music, food trucks, a live mermaid and silent auction. Schulberg said since they had such a tremendous response to the documentary, “Troubled Waters,” it will be shown at 8:20 p.m.

“We got tremendous feedback from the movie,” Schulberg said of the sold-out showing at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre on Aug. 5. “We sold Broadway Palm out and the (50) overflow tickets.”

In addition, those who bring their dogs to the event will receive a free Calusa Waterkeeper bandana. Guests have the opportunity to also become a Calusa Waterkeeper member for $30, a $10 savings, along with a free T-shirt.

“Everyone is concerned about the water – old, young, married, single, fresh to the area. People are worried about their health. They want to know what is going on – long term risks, what kind of exposure is dangerous. We cover a lot of that ground in the documentary,” Schulberg said.

Showing the documentary during the fundraiser is a great fit as the Cebull family is featured in the film. KJ, Kyle and Amber’s son, closes the movie.

Although previous Calusa Waterkeeper events have been heavy on information regarding blue green algae and red tide, the Rally for Clean Water will have a more fun atmosphere while information is shared about the water toxins.

He said it’s about getting the word out about water quality.

“It’s about raising awareness; inform the population and get them armed with the right information, sound information,” Schulberg said.

He said people want the truth, and when they have the right information they will take the steps to fix the problem.

“We will get to the tipping point where we will all get on the same page,” Schulberg

Millennial Brewing Company is at 1811 Royal Palm Ave, Fort Myers.
