Council to consider bike lane options for Old Burnt Store

2 min read

Responding to a request from the Transportation Advisory Commission, city staff will present two options to City Council on Monday for extending existing bicycle lanes on Old Burnt Store Road.

Staff did an evaluation of the current configuration from Gulfstream to Kismet parkways attempting to provide a safe route for cyclists.

One option brings an estimated cost of $85,000 while the second is estimated to cost $160,000.

Both options contain recommendations for installing “share the road” and “bike lane” signage, installing a paved refuge area, and installing a bicycle lanes on existing four-lane roadway north and southbound from NW 22nd Street to Gulfstream Parkway.

The options differ on the width of new pavement sections along Old Burnt Store Road. Option 1 calls for a five-foot wide section northbound for a dedicated bike lane. Option 2 calls for a 10-foot wide section north and southbound.

Eight items make up the consent agenda this week for routine matters, including purchase of lots for lift stations associated with the utilities expansion in North Cape. One item seeks approval of a contract to hire Stuart Diamond of Getting More, Inc., to assist the city as a professional negotiator in the LCEC Franchise Agreement to achieve a beneficial outcome for electric services. It comes with a not-to-exceed amount of $49,500.

Two resolutions will be presented to council asking for approval and ratification of a tentative agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police for 5 percent wage adjustments for officers, sergeants and lieutenants.

Council also will hear an amendment proposal related to the city’s sign ordinance changes.

Monday’s meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.
