Spring Spectacular April 29-30
A biennial flower show in Cape Coral will feature floral designs and local horticulture.
Sponsored by the Garden Club of Cape Coral and the Potpourri Designers, Spring Spectacular will be held April 29 from 3 to 5 p.m. and April 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cape Coral Lee County Public Library. A juried standard flower show, it will be judged by a panel with the National Garden Club Inc.
“We do it every two years,” Paula Novander, the show chairperson, said of the competition.
There have been about five shows organized over the years, with a few hundred attendees at each.
For the design division, there are six categories including Spring Forward – Fall Back, Alternative Uses of Springs – an Assemblage, Spring Green – Line Design for Novices, Spring-time Brunch – Functional Table, Springtime Beginnings – Petite, and Spring Break – Mass Design for Novices.
First, second and third place ribbons will be presented to the winners in each.
Novander noted that there will also be a Design of Excellence awarded to the overall winner.
The horticulture division will include everything from cut specimens and landscaping, to potted plants.
“We get 150 to 200 entries,” she said.
Again, there will be several categories judged, as well as the Horticulture of Excellence.
“There will be a People’s Choice,” Novander said.
“They can write down their favorite thing that they saw,” she added.
The People’s Choice winner will receive a ribbon.
Novander explained that one of the founding members of the group, Marty Ward, passed away this year. In honor of her contributions, an award will be given to the best bromeliad in a container.
“That’s a special award we’re offering this year,” she said.
According to Novander, the show provides designers with an outlet to express their creativity, as well as enables people who are growing plants with a venue to exhibit some of what they are growing.
Lee County Master Gardeners will be on site to answer questions from the public.
“We can talk to your about your citrus problems, lawn problems, insect problems,” she said.
There also will be informational and educational booths set up.
“If you’re interested in plants at all in Florida, it’s such a unique environment,” Novander said.
“It’s neat to see some of the stuff that can be grown here in Florida,” she added.
The show is accepting submissions for the horticulture division on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the library. There is no cost, and submissions can be cuttings or contained in up to a 10-inch pot.
