A Cape Coral man involved in a two-vehicle accident over the weekend died from his injuries.

Harry Carroll Wilson, 93, of 1101 N.E. 10th Terrace, was trauma-alerted Sunday to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he died as a result of the injuries that he sustained in the crash, officials reported.

Cape police reported that Wilson was headed south on Del Prado Boulevard North in a Nissan Sentra, when he stopped in the left turn lane at Northeast Sixth Street at 9:31 a.m. At the same time, a Dodge Caravan was northbound on Del Prado, driven by Carl O. Reijer, 29, of 5024 S.W. 11th Place.

According to multiple witnesses, Wilson began his left turn onto Sixth Street as the northbound traffic light was red. They observed Reijer run the light, and the front of the van struck the Nissan head on.

The Dodge was redirected to the northeast and drove off the road, where it hit a traffic signal box before stopping. The Nissan spun counterclockwise and came to a rest in the northbound lanes.

Police reported that Wilson sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident. Reijer sustained minor head injuries and was also transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.

As of Tuesday, he had been treated and released.

The accident is not alcohol or drug related, police reported.

According to official records, Reijer pleaded guilty in February to running a stop sign-violation of right. In March 2015, he was found guilty of operating a motor vehicle without a valid license when he violated probation, which was ordered in 2014 when the court withheld adjudication on the charge.

In 2014, Reijer was also found guilty of running a stop sign-violation of right and knowingly driving while license suspended revoked; adjudication was withheld for operating a moped on a sidewalk.

He could not be reached for comment on Tuesday regarding the weekend crash.
