Pine Island Potters’ Guild’s March Show Saturday

3 min read

Spring has come to Pine Island and the Pine Island Potters’ Guild is saluting the incredible Florida weather with the March Potter’s Guild Show in the courtyard of Koucky Studios.

The event is this Saturday, March 12.

All works by participating artists will be available for purchase. This small venue provides a welcoming environment to chat with local artists, inquire about their craft and learn about opportunities in our area for classes and workshops.

The art of horsehair pottery firing will be demonstrated by potter Chuck Koucky at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Horsehair pottery, as the name implies, incorporates hair from the tails and manes of horses into its design. The random lines and patterns, that is the signature of this style, are created when applying strands of hair to the surface of a hot raku clay pot that has just been removed from the kiln. The horsehair combusts and carbonizes, leaving random patterns in the pot’s surface. The use of horse hair is preferred in the technique as it makes beautiful random patterns because of its coarseness and length.

This month the guild welcomes back Joe Camil with his fine woodwork. He will be showing his turned bowls, pens, utensils and more. He is visiting Pine Island again this winter from Vermont and the studio is glad to have him back with his exquisite pieces.

The March show also highlights the works of local potters, jewelers, painters and photographers. Locally produced gourmet vinegars and mustard by Witches Brew Vinegar Company will be offering its products. Be sure to pick up some fresh baked goods for a delicious snack or to take home for a special addition to any meal. Radiant Life Yoga will be offering samples of Raw Foods. Ask them about the yoga classes and workshops.

The Pine Island Potters Guild meets on the second Saturday of each month, from November though April, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Koucky Studios, 5971 Bay Point Road, Bokeelia.

At these gatherings, the guild hosts a pottery show and sale, pottery demonstrations, as well as an idea exchange between local potters and artists.

The general public is always invited to attend and meet the potters and visiting artists.

Interested in joining The Pine Island Potters’ Guild? The guild is always open to new members and there is no membership fee. The spirit of the guild is to exchange ideas, techniques and experiences, and to participate in joint projects. Potters of all levels of experience are encouraged to join. Those who are interested in pottery, but who have not yet created any works in clay, are especially encouraged to come and talk with potters about this creative and varied medium.
