‘March in the Park’ set for Saturday
The 8th Annual March in the Park will feature dozens of vendors with plants and artwork.
Hosted by the Garden Club of Cape Coral, the event will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jaycee Park. There will be about 40 local vendors, along with speakers, a children’s area and more.
Parking and admission are free.
“This is our only fundraiser that we have for the year,” Carolyn France, the event co-chair, said.
Proceeds from the event fund scholarships for high school seniors who want to pursue a career in ecology or biology, as well as scholarships for local children to attend a youth camp in Florida.
France noted that the club also maintains three public gardens in the city with the monies.
An estimated 800 to 1,000 people turned out for last year’s event.
“It’s grown every year,” she said.
The vendors will have plant-related items for sale, such as plants, art, clothing and gardening supplies, along with local non-profits, Trafalgar Middle School and Cape Coral High School, and others.
“They’re mostly plant-related vendors,” France said.
“We have just a little bit of everything if you’re interested in plants,” she said.
The plant selections will consist of orchids, bromeliads, Florida-friendly species and more.
“There will be lots and lots of very nice plants for sale,” France said.
“This is an ideal place to come and find out what’s good to grow in our area,” she said.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event will feature a speaker every hour. The following are scheduled:
* Trafalgar Middle School: Planting in a Hay Bale
* Kathy Woodlock: Planting Vegetables in Earth Boxes
* Vanessa Hazzleton: How to Make a Basket Out of a Palm Frond
* Donna Cressman: Palm Trees
* Cape Coral High School: Biochar
There will be an Ask the Expert table on site manned by Master Gardeners.
“If you’ve got a question or want some information,” France said.
“They’ll have some information to hand out, too,” she added.
The Kids Booth will offer free activities for the family.
“It’s plant-related crafts for the kids to make while mom and dad go shopping,” France said.
Throughout the day, an opportunity drawing will be held every hour. Tickets will be available for a donation of $1 each or six for $5. Some items up for grabs include donations from the vendors.
“We have a garden wagon filled with garden supplies. We have a hand-painted rain barrel,” she said, adding that there are Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and Cultural Park Theatre tickets and more.
The live entertainment will be provided by a deejay.
