‘Wrap the Cape’ in purple bows to fight cancer

A Relay for Life team is asking citizens and businesses to get involved for just a few bucks.

Team Friends, for the Relay for Life of Cape Coral, is hosting a fundraiser called Wrap the Cape in Purple. The team is selling handmade 8-inch bows for display outside of homes and businesses.

Team captain Linda Biondi explained that this is the first year Relay for Life will take place in the South Cape. It will kick off on April 23 at noon at Four Freedoms Park, at 4818 Tarpon Court.

“We started thinking about what we could do – the restaurants and bars always have something fun going on,” she said. “We said, ‘Let’s do something to make people aware of the Relay for Life.'”

They came up with the idea to “wrap” the Cape in purple, which is the official event color.

“We’re making up the bows,” Biondi said. “They’re nice big bows. It’s a big ribbon.”

The bows are available for purchase for $3 each or two for $5.

As of Thursday, the team had sold 100 and have additional orders that still have to be filled.

“I’m waiting for more material to come in,” she said.

Biondi noted that the owner of BackStreets Sports Bar bought a bunch of the purple bows to put up around her establishment, as did the owner of Dixie Roadhouse and other businesses in the area.

“I want every business in the South Cape to have at least one,” she said.

But, that does not mean those located outside of the downtown area cannot show their support for Relay for Life. Biondi encouraged homeowners and businesses throughout the city to pick up a bow.

“This is the first time we’ve done anything like this,” she said.

The team anticipated selling 100 or 150 bows.

“I think we’re going to end up selling a lot more,” Biondi said.

“This is definitely a successful fundraiser,” she added. “It’s being very well received.”
