Arrest made in Boathouse burglary
A Cape Coral man has been charged with burglary of a local restaurant after police say they found a cigarette with his DNA on scene.
Jeffrey J. Hay, 33, of 1722 SW Santa Barbara Pl., was arrested by members of the Cape Coral Police Department Street Crimes Unit Thursday night on a warrant for Burglary and Grand Theft in connection with a March break-in at the Boathouse Restaurant at the Cape Coral Yacht Club.
“The break in the case came from a tiny piece of evidence found by a meticulous Patrol Officer,” a release issued Friday by the Cape Coral Police Department states. “The suspect was seen on video smoking a cigarette during the burglary. Officer Ryan Tronchet, of the Patrol Bureau locate and collected the discarded cigarette butt and cigarette pack and submitted it for Forensic analysis. Forensics was able to obtain a DNA sample and match it to Hay, leading to the issuance of the arrest warrant.”
Approximately 400 pounds of frozen seafood and two stand-up paddle boards were reported stolen in the March 27 early morning burglary. Police say the person, caught on video, made multiple trips to a mini-van.
