Police release name of pedestrian who died following Fort Myers accident

The pedestrian who died after being stuck by a car while attempting to cross Fowler Street in Fort Myers Saturday has been identified as Deborah Diane Kirkland, 55 of Cape Coral.

Traffic homicide investigator Officer Jason Sandt found that Kirkland, who was critically injured and died after being taken to Lee Memorial Hospital, “violated the vehicle’s right-of-way” in the collision that happened shortly after midnight in the 2200 block of Fowler.

She was wearing dark clothing and was not in a designated crosswalk, officials said.

“The vehicle driver, David Edward Turner, took evasive action to avoid hitting Kirkland but was unable to avoid the crash,” a release issued by the Fort Myers Police Department on Monday states. “Officer Sandt advised Turner showed no signs of impairment during the on scene investigation.”

Turner will not be charged or cited in the accident, officials said.
