Church’s ‘9-for-90’ project serves the community

3 min read

For Faith Bible Fellowship Church, May is a time for giving of oneself – nine times over.

The church is in the middle of its annual 9-for-90 service project. The church chooses nine opportunities that each member of the congregation can choose from to serve for 90 minutes.

“We find nine city-related and religious organizations that could use our services, and the main idea is to get out and serve the community,” said Pastor Dan Roth. “We ask everyone in the church to choose one of those nine and serve for 90 minutes.”

Roth has noticed some in the congregation have chosen two or three, and two have chosen all nine of them. Very few of his 90-member congregation (thus the original name 90-for-90) has yet to serve their time, he said.

Some of the services church members will choose from include washing the youth vans and preparing the garden at the Cape Coral Youth Center; helping Bootstrap Ministries serve meals to the homeless in Cape Coral; and they have already spent an evening with Special Populations at their spring dance and will help Lifeline Family Center to organize and clean their storage areas, as it did last Saturday.

The church will round out its ministry on Saturday by feeding the homeless around town with hot dogs and handing out hygiene items for free.

“That should be the most popular one. We’ll talk to them and encourage them. Let them know they’re cared about,” Roth said. “People have donated the hygiene items that they can use.”

Roth said he hopes to make this a twice-a-year event, as the church debuted it in November. He hopes to do it in November and around Easter next year.

“It’s not just to be thankful for what you have, but to serve others and help them to be blessed and feel the love of Christ,” Roth said.

The 9-for-90 project is its main outreach, and a little from a lot sure adds up.

“If you multiply this out, it’s a lot of hours. On Sunday we had 100 hours served. That’s two-and-a-half-weeks for a full-time worker,” Roth said. “It’s flexile and a great variety from washing cars to working at a garden to helping the homeless.”

The Faith Bible Fellowship church started five years ago and currently meets at the Youth Center. The church will hold a vacation Bible school the week of June 9.
