Cape Cops Fun Run set for May 17
The eighth annual Cape Cops 5K Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run, presented by Fuccillo Kia, will be held Saturday, May 17, at the Cape Coral Yacht Club.
Proceeds from the event will go to assist families of fallen or injured police officers.
Officer Georgeann Lytle said that in the beginning, the run was to benefit the department’s “Do The Right thing” program, which rewards school children for good deeds.
For the last four years, it has gone to benefit officers’ families throughout Lee County.
“We’ve raised about $7,000 the last three years through this event, and we always hope to do better than last year,” Lytle said. “Last year we had 500 participants, and if we can get that many this year, that would be great.”
It is suggested runners pre-register on or before May 16. Youths 18 and under is $15, adults $25, and all race-day entries are $35.
Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 7:30 a.m. All participants will be entered in a free raffle drawing for many prizes, including gift cards, merchandise and two round-trip tickets on the Key West Express and a three-hour limo ride and dinner.
“We’re also going to have a photo booth and some great donations for raffle prizes, and the SWAT team will have their equipment out there,” Lytle said.
Awards will also be given out to the top male and female overall winners, as well as those in the masters, grandmasters and senior grandmaster divisions, age 40+, 50+ and 60+, respectively. Age group awards also will be handed out in the run and walk, male and female.
Children under 12 will take part in a free fun run, which will take place after the 5K is completed. Medallions will be given to each participant.
The Fort Myers Track Club was founded in 1978 to promote health and fitness through running. Membership is open to all ages and abilities. Their approximately 600 members range from speedy racers to recreational joggers and walkers.
