Spring book sale at Cape Library next week
Friends of the Cape Coral Library are conducting their spring book sale next weekend to raise funds to support programs offered through the library throughout the year.
This book sale, and another one held in the fall, are the major source each year that the Friends of the Cape Coral Library use to help fund children’s programs offered by the library, like shows and reading sessions. The art gallery in the library, chess club, butterfly garden and adult programs also benefit.
The Friends also provide light refreshments and prizes for the Earth Day coloring contest, English cafe, Books and Banter and other popular events at the library.
Book sale chairman Bob Novander said about 8,000 hard bound books, CDs, and DVDs will be available for purchase as well as about 2,000 paperback books representing the full range of literary work.
“We even have a number of foreign language books for sale,” said Novander. “We are accept donations throughout the year that people can leave at the library or call for pickup. About 80 percent of all the books we get come from donations outside the library.”
The sale runs from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, for members only. Guests can join Friends at the door for the annual fee of $10, or $15 for family.
The sale continues 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
The library is at 921 SW 39th Terrace just off Mohawk Parkway west of Skyline Boulevard.
About 95 percent of the books at the sale are priced between 50 cents and $2, according to Novander.
“We raise about $20,000 each year through our two book sales,” said Novander. “It’s a lot of work, but it pays off.”
Books left over after the sale are taken by area book shops to be sold there.
Friends membership is the largest in Lee County at more than 200 community members and volunteers. Meetings are held at 9:30 a.m. at the library on the third Saturday of January, March, September and November.
