Cape man dies in motorcycle crash
A Cape Coral man was fatally injured Friday after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a van at Del Prado Boulevard North and Coral Lakes Boulevard.
Brian Michael Giel, 23, of 1927 S.E. 11 Terrace, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8:10 p.m. crash, officials said in a statement released Saturday.
The driver of the van, identified as Lee Reeves, 60, of, 3012 Lake Manatee Court, Cape Coral, was not injured, officials reported.
According to police, the motorcycle was traveling south on Del Prado Boulevard, approaching the area of Coral Lakes. The van was northbound on Del Prado Boulevard and entered into the turn lane to turn west into the community.
Reeves told police there were no lights/vehicles approaching the intersection and he began to turn. He said that the motorcycle “then appeared in front of his headlights” and the front of van struck the left side of motorcycle. Giel was ejected from the bike, struck the roadway and then the curb with his head before landing on the front lawn of Coral Lakes.
Giel was pronounced dead by responding emergency personnel with the Cape Coral Fire Department and Lee County EMS.
Reeves showed no signs of impairment, officials said.
This is the second traffic fatality this year in Cape Coral.
