There’s still time to enroll for specialized high school programs

Time is running out for Lee County students to enroll in a specialized high school program.

Applications for the International Baccalaureate, Center for the Arts and Cambridge-AICE programs available in all three zones of the School District of Lee County must be turned in before Feb. 14.

Cape Coral High School offers the International Baccalaureate program in the West Zone, while the Center for the Arts and Cambridge-AICE programs are located at North Fort Myers High School.

Each program comes with its own set of entrance requirements, such as an essay. For students relocating to Lee County, additional information like report cards and tests scores may be required.

“They are simple applications,” Leila Muvdi, director of Student Assignment for the district, said Tuesday. “But there are certain requirements.”

For example, students applying for the arts program must undergo an audition process.

“They have to apply as soon as possible, so they get an appointment for the audition,” she said.

The applications can be found on each respective high school’s Web site. They can also be picked up from each of the school’s guidance counselors or at any of the three Student Assignment offices.

A Student Assignment office is located in Cape Coral, at 370 N. Santa Barbara Blvd.

“Those applications need to be turned in at the school they’re applying for,” Muvdi said. “They don’t come to Student Assignment to turn in those applications.”

Students applying for a specialized program, however, still need to submit an application for a zone school assignment – regular school – in case the entrance criteria for the program is not met.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be accepted – that’s a backup plan for that student,” she said.

Zone school applications must be turned in before March 28.

“They still have plenty of time to come through and do their application,” Muvdi said.

Zone applications can be completed online or turned in at any of the Student Assignment offices.
