FMPD: Cape motorcyclist succumbs to injuries
A Cape Coral motorcyclist has died following a crash near the Midpoint Memorial Bridge.
The Fort Myers police reported Friday that Rustin Eugene Day, 25, succumbed to his injuries.
At 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, Day was headed westbound on Colonial Boulevard when he collided into the rear of a Nissan car at the entrance to the bridge, just east of the McGregor Boulevard flyover. Day was ejected from the motorcycle due to the impact and he sustained life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Day was trauma-alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
Speed, along with drugs or alcohol, were reportedly contributing causes to the crash.
According to a report, investigators with the Fort Myers police estimated that Day was traveling approximately 120 mph before the accident. The posted speed limit in the area is 45 mph.
Day was wearing a motorcycle helmet and eye protection at the time of the crash.
Investigators noted that the motorcycle flipped numerous times after colliding into the vehicle and “disintegrated.” Day was “ejected over the side of the bridge into the trees off of McGregor,” where he was found. Motorcycle debris was scattered over the bridge and a 500-foot area on the street below.
The report states that the driver of the Nissan was not injured in the accident.
